As part of our efforts to help improve the standard of living among Latinos across the country, The Latino Coalition Foundation has been analyzing ways to promote programs to better prepare our community for the challenges of the modern economy. As part of improving the quality of education, TLCF believes that we need to begin promoting financial literacy among our youth. In order to improve the chance for a successful life as adults, our youth needs to get a good education and begin developing the ability to start saving and building wealth and equity.
The Latino Coalition Foundation launched a program to promote the importance of savings, especially among Latino children. The program entitled "Por Mi Futuro" will launch special targeted tax-favored retirement accounts for low-income Hispanic students, ages 10-12. The account will be opened with an initial contribution of $1,000 and will provide matching funds of up to $500 annually to encourage constant participation from the children and their parents. The purpose of this program is to foster increased savings and investment opportunities among America's Latino youth, and to develop a habit of savings particularly among lower income Hispanic families.
